these are the same design as the old honeywell filter I bought 8 years ago. Didn't care for them and bought 2 ionic breeze which I realy liked. This unit takes some of the smoke out of the air but not much dust.

I live in NYC in a one bedroom apt that's around 650 sq feet. I have two cocker spaniels, a siamese cat and two parrots(African Gery and Red Bellied). I have a cleaning lady that comes twice a month and figured these purifer's would assist with the dust and dander of my pets. I've never had an air purifer before so I wasn't sure what to expect but I did love there industrial look. I figured they would match perfectly with the look of my place. Not to mention the price was nice too. Iv'e had them for 2 1/2 weeks now and I have no complaintes at all. They are small enough to stick in any corner of my place. I decided to put one in my bedroom and the other in the livingroom. They are super quiet and the blue light can work as a night light. After the first week I took out the metal rods and saw nothing on them. I then grabbed a white cloth to wipe them down and wow to my amazement a ton of brown/black stuff was all over the cloth.

It's only been 2 1/2 weeks but so far so good I really like them a lot. :)

yes it is ionic and it does have a uv filter BUT the "odor absorbing carbon filter" is nothing more that a piece of mesh screening and does not provide proper filtration, BUT it does seem to do well with its ionic cleaning.

I ordered two units, one for an office and one for a bedroom. The UV light in one of the units didn't work, but not worth sending in back over. The units are relatively quiet and easy to clean. The use the same basic design as an old unit I got at Radio Shack: a squarish metal rod that can be removed for cleaning, with wires built into the unit also generating the electrostatic potential. Compared to the Radio Shack units the rods in these are tiny - less than 1/2 the surface area. After 3 weeks they were also a lot less dirty than the Radio Shack's had been in the same room. So, they don't clean the air as well as the old unit. That said, they do an OK job and certainly better than nothing.

"Quiet effective air cleaner, tips for use of sensors!" 2010-10-27

I don't have much to add to all the other reviews, this air cleaner is the best of all those I have tried. It moves more air than the other brands I tried, while making a lot less noise. I leave it on the 2nd fan setting at night and I find the low noise a pleasant white noise. On night/silent mode I can barely hear it at all, and it is right beside the bed on my side.

I purchased this the same day I got a new mattress. I have allergies and asthma, mostly to pollen and outdoor allergens - however this has been an unbearable year for me with the worst pollen season ever. I have been meaning to buy a HEPA filter but could not bring myself to spend the money, but finally when we bought the new mattress I knew that the "new mattress smell" from off gassing chemicals would not only aggravate my allergies, but also be bad for our health.

So I bought the smallest model, since the main difference is the power of the fan, and I intend to set it on high when not in the room and a lower setting manually when I am sleeping. I read the manual and found out that when it is first plugged in, the unit sets its sensors to a "baseline" in your home. All readings in the future are relative to this baseline. Since we had just unpacked a brand new, smelly mattress beside it, the filter was setting its sensors to a very high baseline. Therefore I manually set the fan to max and left it running all day.

When we returned home the smell from the new mattress was much diminished. Obviously the air filter can only remove the VOCs as they enter the air, and over the next week or so the mattress continued to off-gas but the air filter kept the smell from accumulating in the room.

During that entire time, the chemical and dust sensors stayed at the bottom or rarely went up to "1". that did not surprise me since the baseline was set when the machine was set up in a very "dirty" air room.

After a week of running the filter on high when we were out and on the second setting at night, I unplugged the machine for 15 seconds and plugged it back in as advised in the manual to re-set the sensors to the new cleaner baseline. Now, the sensors are very sensitive, when I make the bed, the dust sensor kicks up and often the chemical sensor too, since the mattress is still only a month old there are whiffs of new mattress smells. When I sprayed some shower cleaner (a nontoxic cleaner but contains a scent) in the bathroom - in the next room, the chemical sensor picked up to max. When I cleaned the cat litter box, the dust sensor picked up even though the litter I use is the most expensive dust free kind.

It seems like a lot of the bad reviews are complaining that the machine does not sense their dirty air. If people would read the manual they would find out about this baseline setting and know that all they need to do is set the filter manually to max for a few days to clean the air, then unplug the machine for 15 seconds and plug it back in, the sensors will reset to the new cleaner air and from then on be more sensitive if you want to use the automatic settings.

The only CON I can find about this machine is that described by others - the display is way too bright and can't be turned off at night. Since most of us will use this in the bedroom for allergies, it is a huge oversight that they do not allow the display to be turned off. I hope that future models will implement this option. For now, I have to tape cardboard over the display.

I have to admit that I was pretty darn sceptical about this purchase. This was a difficult purchase for me for a number of reasons, #1 the price, #2 wondering if this would fit my needs and cover my issues, #3 wondering how the company would handle warranty if something should go wrong after the purchase, #4 worrying if these reviews were true (seemed too good to be true).

The reason I purchased this unit was to help out my family as we pinpoint either what appears to be an allergy issue to mold spores, pollen, dust or a combination. My home is only 4-5 yrs old, but we've had some leaks...we believe our toddlers have become allergic to the mold spores..or "something" because they've been sick about every two weeks and it's all been upper respiratory issues (coughing, wheezing, throat infections, ear infections, etc)....same symptoms as mold spores. So, there's no doubt, they are allergic to "something" that causing irritation in their throats and I felt like this would help since it traps dust, mold spores, pollen, etc.....while we run some tests on both the house and some allergy tests on the kids. My three year old also has had asthmatic issues since she was born so I knew this would help her breathe easier. We will also remove the carpets in our bedrooms...since all of that crap could be trapped in their as well.

Customer Service - Prior to purchasing....First, I was so sceptical that I contacted the company personally to get a better feeling of how their customer service would go after I purchased it. And to tell you the truth, I was totally in disbelief when a live person was on the other end within 1-2 minutes. She answered all of my concerns, even told me if I had any questions I could call her back and ask for her personally. She reassured me that this unit does remove mold particles and that they had a five year warranty.

My decision - All in all, I decided to take the plunge...and it was the best decision I've ever made! Last night was the first night I ran it...not a single cough from either toddler...no snoring from anyone (not even my husband!), it was the most quiet, and restful night I've had in long time. You can "feel" the cleaness in the air...I didn't know what others were talking about but oh yeah, the air felt a heck of alot fresher! If it did this instantly, I can just imagine how well it's going to do over the next year.

About the unit - This unit is soooo quiet...I got up at 12am just to make sure it was working. With my air conditioner going, I couldn't hear it at all..even when my central air turned off, I couldn't hear it. It is sooo sleek until it puts everything else in my traditional bedroom to shame! I love the modern look, I can't wait to purchase one for the living and kitchen. Since they are expensive this isn't something that I can just run out an buy...:-)

I feel like this was the best purchase, I also feel like I've accomplished something...a cleaner home, healthier kids, and oh, I didn't wake up stuffy nosed that I have done for the past week...for me, this has turned my world "right side up!"

Don't hesitate...I think I've done enough hesitating for everyone. In the end, just let the products rating guide your decision and you can't go wrong! Good luck!

Why should you read this review? 'Cause I actually own the unit, and if you click 'Read all my reviews', you will see that this isn't the only product I have reviewed. So you know that I'm no jerk trying to promote another product, or promote this one.

I've had this 421-a for almost a year, and I have to say I'm disappointed. My bro and I would clean the unit about once every few weeks, but as of recently, we are quite busy. When I say quite busy, I mean we don't care and we play video games all day. Any who, we've been pretty consistent with cleaning the unit up until a few weeks ago, and it's air cleaning abilities are questionable.

With in the past year, it broke once, and the company had honored the warranty and repaired the unit and had it back to me in a timely manner [2-3 weeks]. It didn't work any better. It broke because of a power surge, and my crappy surge protector failed at its job, but nothing else connected to the surge protector was damaged. Go figure.

I've noticed I had to dust a LITTLE less, but I still need to dust. Although I'm an asthmatic, the 2-3 weeks I didn't have it, I didn't feel like it was gone. My breathing was the same, not worse, not better. Also, during the summer, when the windows are open, the operation of the purifier is pretty much useless... The air that comes in, whether dirty or clean, is just replacing the air that is being purified, or ionized.

The Purifier takes a mere 44 watts on high, whether the ionizer is on or off[Measured with a kill-a-watt]. Makes you wonder if there is an ionizer at all?

The past four weeks, we haven't been paying attention to it. I opened it, and lo' and behold, it is filthy as hell. I cleaned it out, and only a handful of dust was collected in the vacuum. ONLY A HANDFUL. My vacuum collects more dust if I vacuum my room weekly, and their isn't much carpet to vacuum either.

Overall, I would say it works, but it isn't worth the price. Buy a cheaper unit from a Japanese company which probably works just as effectively at a lower maintenance cost [darn those replacement filters], OR get a good ionizer and set it high like on a closet, and let all the filth settle to the floor, and vacuum it up weekly. Both of those should work as good, or maybe even better than this thing. I don't know any good units to compare too, I haven't tried anything else, but don't let the "cleaner air" tag get to you... It's only as clean as the air in the rest of your house if the windows are closed, or as clean as outside if the windows are open.

Also, a good point to make is that I live in NY, and although the air quality isn't the worst, it's still pretty bad. Clean the charcoal filter with a odorless detergent or soap... Anything odorless will do the job. If you decide to use something that smells like soap, you might as well throw it away. The charcoal will absorb the soap smell, and it will smell like crap forever after.

Liked the ease of changing filters and the button layout, but when turned on the plastic "squirrel cage" fan was out of balance and produced an annoying sound. Even if the unit came with the fan perfectly balanced, from the quality of the fan, it won't stay like that more than a year. If it was not sitting in the bedroom, it wouldn't be so bad, it is a good price for a hepa filter, but it doesn't move much more air than the $40 unit I had before, it is a top rated one from here as well (which also gave me the same trouble after 6 months of use - fan became out of balanced)

Why such bright blue lights on these units? *sigh* I guess I will have to fork out >$200 for a better unit.

yeah this thing worked, and my allergy is gone now. the noise this thing generates is tolerable, but the unexpected, the heat it can generates! this thing somehow makes the room hot and i cant sleep well at night becuz of the heat coming from this thing...........

i dunno if i should call this a defect or not becuz this thing will save me money from turning on heater in the winter, hehe, but now in the summer in soCal, it's damn annoying.

I've had this item a few years now. I have not noticed a difference in the air quality at all. I had ordered it because of the high ratings it received. It doesnt circulate air well, nor does it take out any odors. I had a $20 Holmes one with an ionizer that I gave to someone and it still works after 10 years. I wish I had kept it for myself.

Im looking for a good true hepa air filter. We've replaced the filters on the HOneywell and it still doesnt get rid of ordors or clean the air.

This hepa air purifier is GREAT!! I owned 2 Siamese cats for 10 years, about 20 years ago. I had a lot of trouble with Asthma and allergies then, and had to give them away when I got pregnant with my child. Well, after all these years I decided to get another cat thinking that I surely couldn't be allergic now. WRONG! I got my little Chocolate Point,Buddy as a kitten in May, and now he is 8 months old and slowly but surely I developed Asthma and allergies AGAIN!! I thought I would try this air filter to see if it would make any difference, and YES it DOES!!! Honestly, within a few hours I could tell the difference in my breathing, and within days I started feeling 100% better! This is a life-saver. I have been using it for over a month, and I LOVE it. I actually ordered another hepa air purifier for my bedroom and I hope it will work as well. I HIGHLY recommend this unit to anyone who has cat allergies or Asthma!! It is big enough that it filters the air in my whole apartment. I have to close my bedroom door, so Buddy does not sleep on my bed!! That is why I ordered a separate unit for my bedroom.

I bought this after my honeywell broke after sooo maney years of use!

The honeywell 18155 is extremely silent ! Even on high!

I have severe asthma aand notice the difference after several hours after I received it & turned it on! Infact I would definetly buy it again!

The only thing is the replacement filter is huge- so i will have to cut it to size when needed!

I purchased this air cleaner based on the overwhelmingly positive prior reviews, especially the ones that said it could clear cigarette smoke. This simply isn't true. It does NOT remove cigarette smoke at all. Upon further research, I found that smoke is simply too small to be captured by the HEPA filter. If you're looking for an air cleaner for cigarette smoke, you need to keep looking...this isn't it!

In spite of my allergist's warnings that 98% of the cheaper Air Cleaners off-gas plastic VOCs and are bad for anyone with allergies or asthma, I went and purchased this model due to its high ratings. It REEKED of off-gassing. Chemical fumes filled the air and made me really ill. Granted, I'm super-sensitive to such fumes, but even if you don't have the nose of a bloodhound, research the dangers of VOCs and chemical fumes. They can disrupt your immune system, cause infertility and damage lungs. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of an air cleaner?!

Thank God for AllerAir cleaners. Expensive at $700 and up, but well-worth preserving my family's health. Now I see why my doctor swore by them. They are the only ones made without dangerous off-gassing materials. We need to demand healthy products from manufacturers that won't damage our health and the environment. Be careful if you buy this air cleaner. Put it outside for at least two weeks and let it off-gas before you bring it inside.

I did a lot of reading and spec comparisons between the various air purifiers out there. This one has a value that is hard to beat at this price point. The cost/benefit ratio curve skews quite a bit beyond this. If you have a large budget it might be worth it, but for me I felt if necessary I could buy more of these if I needed more coverage and still come in under what it would cost to buy one of the more expensive purifiers out there.

I purchased one to help with dust and cat allergies in the bedroom and it has definitely helped. I wake up less congested. As previous reviewers have stated on low and sleep mode the unit is extremely quiet. I sleep with it a ~foot away from me without being disturbed.

The filters are easy to get at and the carbon filters are disposable. You can also change the filter to the one from the 9000 as mentioned elsewhere (I confirmed with their customer service) if you prefer.

I should mention that I got a better deal elsewhere for this unit so unfortunately I didn't get it from Amazon this time, but I'll probably be getting my filters here.

Quiet and functional air cleaner, does what it says. We have it in our master bedroom, we leave it on 24x7 to give my asthmatic wife some relief. When I get up in the morning, the air quality sensor picks up the soap scent during my shower, my aftershave scent, etc. and kicks the speed up off quiet mode until the air is clean again, then automatically gears the speed back down. It was very easy to setup, has been reliable, and just runs and does its thing. I am happy with my purchase, I may buy another.

I have pretty severe dust and rag weed allergies and I have been getting shots for a year and have had no relief. I figured this would help so I got it in conjunction with another unit for my bedroom. 2 months later and it just does not work for me. I will give it 3 stars because nothing seems to work for me and the unit is well built and might work for someone else. Also my energy bill has jumped over $25 a month since using the air filters. I did not sign up for this. If it worked I would take the additional cost in stride. But running something that does not help and spending $300 a year to do so is not what I want to do with my money.

I was so impressed by this air purifier that I purchased 5 more units. I use one in my bedroom and another one inside my Rinker 342 Fiesta Vee Cabin Cruiser. I also sent one to my parents in Destin, Florida. My children use the other units in their bedrooms either at home or away at college. Everyone to whom I have given a unit absolutely loves it. The unit is easy to disassemble, clean and reassemble. The hepa filter is downwind from the prefilter and electrostatic filter, which are easy to clean and catch the vast majority of the dust. This setup markedly extends the life of the hepa filter which is affordable and should only have to be replace about once a year. Believe the 5 star rating. At around $200 or less this unit is an incredible value.

This is by far the best bang for the buck air purifier I researched and then purchased. It's sensitive so if you take your shoes and socks off close to this in "auto" you'll hear it shift into a faster speed/higher gear if you will. I made eggs with this off and took out the garbage and when I walked back in I could smell the eggs I just made. So I turned it on close to the kitchen and went to the car to get something and waited around a little, but when I came back there was no egg smell albeit it was on high but still this thing WORKS hard for you. 1. Customer Service with Amazon is A++++ The first purifier I received was scratched and scuffed so I emailed customer service and explained the condition it arrived and they automatically sent me a new one out which I received the next morning. Also they paid for the return shipping on the returned item. This is why I buy from Amazon!

2.The Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier works really well. It picks up odors and works exactly as the description says. I have had two Oreck purifiers and had constant problems with their over priced air purifiers. I can't see me buying Oreck in the future as long as I can find one that works as well as the Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier. I will post an update as to the durability after I have had it for a while. I highly recommend this product.

It is great to get air moving around my small apartment, and (by looking at the filter) seems to have removed a good amount of dust. the only thing is the inner filters are honey combed shaped, and are about 3/4 mm in diameter, and dont seem to have any purpose if the outer filter in so small it removes everything to tiny dust particles. it doest add up. my assumption is the honey comb inner filter uses electrostatics to capture particles much smaller than dust...?

*~ summing up. its quiet, powerful, has three levels of power, and has a control for automatic pivot (90 degrees). i have had it on everyday for atleast 8-9 hours for just over a month and havent noticed a difference in performance yet.
