This seems to work well as an air filter.

It is pretty loud. I have to leave it on low when in the room.



I like that it has a permanent filter, but I'd recommend vacuuming it outside with a non-hepa shop vac to clean the filter. Otherwise you'll just be transferring the particles to another filter or back into the air.

I just received our Honeywell 50250. It was very easy to set up. It is sort of noisy but no more so then our box fan. The only thing I notice that is negative is I smell something funny when it's running. Maybe it's just fresh air that I don't even recognize any longer. Who knows. I'm waiting for hubby to get home to see if he smells anything. Aside from that, it's big, it sucks in and put out with great energy.I know I haven't sneezed all day so that in and of itself is a blessing. With 6 dogs running around there is a LOT of dander floating around.

It's also a little larger than I thought, and because it has to be a certain distance away from furniture, walls, etc., it takes up even more room.

Bought this machine for the master bedroom. Very well built and of high quality. Then I turned it on high, and it sounded like a jet engine. This unit is very loud when it's on high which is what the owners manual recommends to obtain maximum filtering. Medium speed is OK if you are sleeping and want white noise in the background. To watch TV or have a conversation with someone who is like 20 feet away in another room, you are going to have a hard time hearing them speak or hear the TV unless you really crank up the volume. The lowest setting is the best, as it is pretty quiet. The only time we run the machine on high is when we leave the room or the house. Believe me, it's very annoying on the high speed setting. The cleaning of dust in the air so far has not been what I would call impressive,and I have been running it nonstop for over a month. And that's what I bought the unit for is to reduce the amount of dust in the bedroom. But for cleaning odors in the air say from cooking, or if you burn something on the stove and you get the smoke lingering in the air, we just moved machine to that room and in just 20 minutes there was no evidence of any smoke or odor. So bottom line, I think the machine is OK, but for my needs, it falls way short.

Had this thing for a couple months now, and it works great. Loud, yes - on medium or high. Solution - we run it when we're at work, and when we're sleeping upstairs. When we're in the room, it's on low or turned off.



The reduction in dust in our living room is significant, especially considering the space exceeds the maximum rating for the machine. Cuts down on allergies, stuffy nose, etc - overall works great. You can see from the accumulation on the pre-filter what the machine has saved you from breathing in. Well worth the money.

I moved out to a condo that is less than 2 miles from a rock quarry in the Azusa CA area. As a result, every time I run the AC, or open a window, nearly everything nearby is coated in a fine, gritty patina of dust. Lately this has been affecting my sleep the point that I'm waking up with a horrible raspy throat and runny nose. I decided to purchase this model for my living room and the Quietcare 17000 for my bedroom to see if I could improve the overall air quality in the condo and also minimize my issues that I was having going to sleep. I've had them for about a week now and I have to say the improvement is indeed quite noticeable.



The air feels noticeably fresher and cleaner, I can't really describe it any other way. The odors from the adjoining kitchen (food, smoke, trashcan, recycling bin, etc) are effectively absorbed by this unit and the built-in fan circulates the air quite nicely as well. Sleep at night has also gotten better as well. I'm no longer waking up at night with a mouth and sinus cavity full of gunk and my throat is not nearly as sore as it used to be.



I'd say the only downside is that the "Turbo" and "Home" settings (High and Medium for you and me) are noticeably, well...there's no way to mince words with this...they're freaking loud. Particularly Turbo. I'd say you can only really use these settings if you say leave for the day and not have anyone in the immediate vicinity of this device because at those levels the noise is quite overpowering and I doubt anyone could really do anything in the same room as this filter while it's on its maximum fan settings.



Other than the leafblower levels of noise with its max fan settings, this is a fine HEPA air cleaner for your residence. The 384 sq feet of coverage is fantastic, it actually circulates the air in the room very well, and will allow you to improve the air quality inside your home very nicely. The permanent filter and the ability to clean it without outright replacing it is a welcome feature in today's tough economy.

I did a lot of research and waffling about before settling on this air purifier. I suffer from intense seasonal allergies and while no air purifier will eliminate them, I was hoping for at least a little help easing them. I decided to buy the Honeywell 50250 based purely on the CADR rating, which is the best I've seen.



After getting it home, my first impressions are that it is simply huge! My apartment is small and it doesn't tuck up against a wall like more rectangular models do. Next, I turned it on and it was much, much louder than I was hoping. Even on the lowest setting, it made a substantial racket from the next room. I could NOT watch TV with it on without bumping up the volume and disturbing my neighbors. One thing I know about myself is that if the air purifier is too loud, I won't use it. I have every intention of turning it on before going to bed or leaving for work, but it just doesn't happen consistently. I know this because the last Honeywell air purifier I had was also loud, though more compact, and it didn't get used as often as it should to have been really effective.



I took it back immediately and settled on buying a RabbitAir 421A cleaner instead. I know it has a lower CADR rating and is more expensive but I leave it on 24-7 so I believe it's more useful. It has different modes (automatic, pollen, sleep, ozone-free ionizer on/off, and more), and it is VERY QUIET. As a less important note, it is also less ugly than the Honeywell.



If you live in a moderate to large space in a louder city that might help drown out the noise, then the Honeywell 50250 may work for you. It didn't for me.

This is not your typical "ionic breeze" style purifier. it is not silent, it is not energy efficient, it does create some waste heat (heats up the room when run continously)



However. If you are using this to circulate your room and properly clean the air. this is your unit.



Pros -



Will clean a standard room (12x15) multiple times an hour.

has permanent filters

sturdy base will not fall over like some of those tower models (good if you have kids)



Cons -



Loud. the low setting is noticeable, the high setting is very loud, sounds like an air conditioner on the high setting

large - takes up a large floor footprint and must be at least 3 feet from every wall (basically in the middle of the room)

uses substantial electricity, we have 3 running full time in our house. it will eat up considerably more energy than your "ionic breeze"

permanent filters are not really permanent. apparently people have complained that the filters need replacing, this is not the case unless you damage them or physically get them wet.

the best reviews was the Honeywell 50250. I have used the purifier for almost 3 months, it

was very easy to set up from the box, the filter is the type that you clean and re-use, and

has a charcoal pre-filter! My wife and I both love it! The dust in our house has been reduced

drastically! We do not have allergies so I cannot say it has reduced the allergins but the

I bought this purifier on the advice of my allergist in October 2009. He told me I had to get a HEPA air purifier. I've been using it almost non-stop for the last 3 months.

I need to use the purifier only in the winter when the house is closed up. I have a cat and that is the main reason for getting the Honeywell 50250. I get the usual; sniffing, sneezing, watery eyes, etc..but I also get itchy eyes all through the winter from the cat. Unfortunately for me I cannot stop myself from scratching, which causes my eyes to get puffy, dry, and scaly. I can control the upper respiratory symptoms with OTC antihistamines, but controlling the itchy eyes has been more difficult. Drops help some, but I knew that an air purifier was the answer so I did my research before purchasing this one. I have been very pleased. My eyes have so far made it through the winter with a minimum of problems. Even when I was off work for a week over the holidays and spent a lot of time at home.

Some have commented on the noise. I don't think it's that bad. It is about as loud as a window air conditioner. I turn it to high when I'm gone then on low for sleep. One advantage is that it has cut out any street noise and has turned into a nice white noise. It's been almost 3 months and the filter light still hasn't come on.

One downside is that it makes the air in the room VERY dry. I guess that's a point of a purifier because humid air can breed mold and dust mites, but combined with the already dry winter air, that just makes me shock myself around the house and that wasn't a problem prior to the purifier. Definitely not a plus. So, I've had make sure my humidifier is constantly going to counteract the dry purified air.

I purchased this product from Home Depot due to a sale. I think it's excellent for this price range. The only negative is that it makes noise. I sleep with this on the quietest level and it took two nights to adjust. Although, I do wear ear plugs but I did this even before this purchase. On a side note- I recently read a study that said using an air purifier increases cardiovascular health. (Of course avoid air purifiers that emit ozone because it's carcinogenic.)



Edit: One aspect I didn't consider before making this purchase is that this air purifier lowers the temperature in the room.

The solution for the nightlight is simple. Cover it with a jar lid. Go to your kitchen and find a screw-on lid from a jar. Any lid that is about 2 1/4 to 3 inches in diameter will work....a jar of applesauce, gravey, spaghetti sauce, whatever. Place it over the dial/light area and duct tape it down on the high side. Then you can flip it up from the bottom to turn the thing on and off, and flip it back down when you're done. The bright light is gone. There is still a little light that seeps out around the top of the machine, just enough to see where it is in the dark, but there is no longer a bright beacon that bounces off the ceiling and lights up the whole room.



This is the second Honeywell air purifier I've had and I love it. The first one finally died after eight years of nightly use. Our bedroom is large so I needed another big unit. I was a little hesitant to get this model after reading about the loudness and the light in the reviews. But I took the gamble. The noise is the same as the older model I had..not that bad. Just background noise that is good to sleep to. The light really is bright and does bounce off the ceiling like an airport beacon. But it's easy to cover up as I described above and that problem is solved. I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because I had to find a solution for the bright light. But it is serving me very well for my purpose...breathing easy while sleeping well.

I generally don't believe in air filters ever since reading about an Italian study where they saw that children who grew up in homes with purified air were more likely to be asthmatic and have other health issues. It makes sense--if you train your lungs to be accustomed only to the purest of air, then you are too fragile to handle the polluted air outside.



Nonetheless, I purchased this air filter for its HEPA filter when we renovated our master bedroom and I was still freaked out about the possibility of lead paint dust in the air. Even after the renovations were complete, we continued to run the air filter in our bedroom simply because we saw that it was an effective white noise machine for our toddler (who still sleeps with us and who still needs the noise machine to keep her from waking at every sound). The machine makes a nice, low hum on its lowest setting, which is less intrusive than the noise machines we'd been previously using.



After 6 months of use, I suddenly realized that none of us have gotten sick this season yet (knock on wood). My daughter is enrolled in 3 different school programs (don't ask) and each of her many classmates and 4 of her 5 teachers/asst. teachers have been out with flu, H1N1, colds or something or other. My husband had 3 major colds and flu before the end of December last year. And yet, none of us have gotten sick yet this year. I cannot definitively trace it to the air purifier, but I think that it has contributed to it.



Moreover, I've noticed that in the living room, when the morning sun streams through the window, you can see all the dust dancing in the rays. In the master bedroom with the air purifier, directly above the living room, the same rays produce almost zero dust floating in the sunlight.



I've been so pleased with this product and I think using it on the low setting and at night only has been great for our family.



My only complaint is the same as others--the blue light is pretty bright at night and there's no easy way to shut it off without dismantling the item. We usually just take a pair of my daughter's sweat pants to throw over the switch to dim the light.

I bought two of these based on the reviews I found here and elsewhere online. One for the bedroom and another for the living room. These little machines are fantastic. I can tell a difference in the air within a matter of minutes, and my allergies have really abated since using them. I highly recommend them!

I read some of the reviews warning how loud this filter is. Being an allergy sufferer, i have had many air filters in my life.



THis thing is huge. It is hard to talk to others in the same room if the purifier is not on the low "sleep" setting.
